San Diego high school outfielder Mickey Moniak was taken first overall by the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday as the 2016 First-Year Player Draft got started. The La Costa Canyon High School star became the first prep outfielder taken with the 1/1 pick since Delmon Young in 2003.
At 6′ 2″ and 190 pounds, Moniak proved to be an elite hitter, though he hasn’t shown plus power yet. While committed to UCLA, Moniak emerged from a field that contained no Carlos Correa or Bryce Harper as a clear number one overall pick.
10 rounds are complete as of Friday evening with rounds 11-40 airing live on MLB Network at noon ET on Saturday.
