QUALIFYING OFFER DEADLINE

The deadline has passed for teams to make qualifying offers of 1YR/$15.3MM and 12 players were on the receiving end this year:

Ervin Santana – Braves
Pablo Sandoval – Giants
Max Scherzer – Tigers
Victor Martinez – Tigers
Michael Cuddyer – Rockies
Francisco Liriano – Pirates
Russell Martin – Pirates
Nelson Cruz – Orioles
David Robertson – Yankees
Melky Cabrera – Blue Jays
James Shields – Royals
Hanley Ramirez – Dodgers

These players have one week to decide whether to accept the qualifying offer or seek a better deal on the free agent market. Ifany of these players sign elsewhere, their current clubs will be compensated with a supplementary pick in next year’s First Year Player Draft. The┬ásigning club would forfeit their first round pick to the signing club.

The team’s with the 10 worst records in 2014 will have their first round pick protected and would thus forfeit their second round pick if they sign one of these players. The Houston Astros also have another compensation pick after failing to sign last year’s first round pick, Brady Aiken.
