Even as Pablo Sandoval clutched the third-out popup to end last night’s World Series with another championship for the Giants, the hot stove season was beginning to heat up. The last day of the Word Series triggers the schedule of events that kicks free agency into full swing.
Five days after the World Series (Monday) qualifying offers are due, and the following day free agents can negotiate with any team. Players receiving qualifying offers have one week to accept or reject them, with this year’s deadline being November 10th.
November 10th is also the first day of the GM meetings in Phoenix, AZ, with the big bang, the Winter Meetings, taking place in San Diego Dec 8-11.
There will be awards announced and the Arizona Fall League will wrap up along with the other offseason leagues. But the wheeling and dealing is about to begin. MLB.com posted a list of all free agents today with indicators for club/player options and including minor league free agents:
As per usual, there are big names on that list, such as Royals’ RHP James Shields and Orioles’ OF/DH Nelson Cruz. Sandoval’s on the list as well. And some clubs are rumored to be ready to spend big this offseason, namely the Cubs, who are rumored to have brought Joe Maddon aboard as manager.
Get ready for another eventful offseason. With two wildcard teams making the World Series, the big prize is within reach for more teams than ever.
