The Arizona Diamondbacks entered Spring Training with an interesting position battle at shortstop, with PCL MVP Chris Owings challenging the incumbent, Didi Gregorius. That battle may have been won, for the time being, by Owings as he has been given the Opening Day start against the Dodgers in Australia.
Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson has announced that Gregorius will start the second game of the series.
Gregorius came over from Cincinnati as a hot prospect before the 2013 season and got off to a brilliant start, but struggled after the first couple of months. Owings, meanwhile, tore up the AAA Pacific Coast League and earned a September callup. In 20 big-league games, Owings hit .291/.361/.382. He followed that up this spring with a line of .273/.319/.364. Not as impressive as his minor league numbers, but maybe enough to win the job.
Chris Owings has been on the HSH Watch List since mid-2012 and it has been all superlatives as he has climbed the minor league ladder. Now it’s time to really watch as he sees major league pitching regularly.
