RHP Jonathan Gray, the third overall pick in last June’s First Year Player Draft was sent down to the Colorado Rockies’ minor league camp on Saturday (MiLB.com). After three spring appearances and 6 2/3 IP, Gray had given up nine hits and four earned runs.
The Rockies gave the right-hander a $4.8MM signing bonus after he was drafted out of Oklahoma. Gray saw two minor league stops in 2013, Grand Junction of the rookie Pioneer League and Modesto of the advanced-A California League. He posted a 4-0 record in five starts at Modesto with six walks and 36 K’s over 2 IP.
This is surely a minor setback for Gray, who MLB.com has rated as the #14 overall prospect. The Rox also sent down 2012 first-round pick Eddie Butler. Both hurlers figure prominently in Colorado’s future pitching plans.
