UPDATE: Sano will have Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss the 2014 season, according to multiple reports.
Minnesota Twins 3B prospect Miguel Sano was scheduled to have his right elbow examined on Friday after making an off-balance throw across his body in a Spring Training game. It’s the same elbow on which Sano suffered a strained UCL in winter ball.
The 21-year old Dominican Republic native is at or near the top of prospect lists all over baseball. MLB.com has Sano as the #4 overall prospect while Baseball America has him at #2 in the Twins’ system, behind only Byron Buxton.
Signed as a free agent at the age of 16 in 2009, Sano has put up impressive numbers in four seasons from Rookie ball to AA. In 2013, after tearing up hiA ball over 56 games, Sano was promoted to AA where he put up a line of .236/.344/.571. The batting average was his lowest as a pro, but his power (19 homers, 15 doubles in 67 games) was unfazed.
News on the results of Sano’s exam will be posted here.
