ANOTHER SLOW YEAR FOR ARBITRATION CASES

We are midway through the Feb 1-21 window for arbitration cases to be heard and so far there have only been two. RHP Andrew Cashner won his case with the Padres while Indians’ reliever Vinnie Pestano lost his.

ANDREW CASHNER: Won
Player Amt – $2.4MM
Team Offer – $2.275MM

VINNIE PESTANO: Lost
Player Amt. – $1.450MM
Team Offer – $0.975MM

The term “lost” probably isn’t accurate as Pestano made $501,000 last season and his raise went up to just under $1MM, rather than the $1.450MM he requested. That’s how arbitration works. The players haven’t reached the promised land of free agency yet, but they get to put in for a performance-based raise after three years of service. The Super-Two’s get a fourth year of arbitration as well.
