PHILLIES EXTEND UTLEY THROUGH 2015

2B Chase Utley is enjoying a bounce back year after three injury-plagued seasons and the Philadelphia Phillies have extended his contract for two years at somewhere in the $25-$30M range. The five-time All-Star was in the last year of a 7yr/$85M contract.

Utley was part of the rock-solid foundation of the World Series-winning 2008 Phillies, along with SS Jimmy Rollins forming a formidable up-the-middle defensive combination as well as providing thunder at the plate. Utley batted .292/.380/.535 that year and followed it up with .282/.397/.508 as the Phillies won their second straight pennant in 2009.

But starting in 2010, Utley would miss time over the next three seasons due to injury, bottoming out last season with 83 games played.

So far in 2013, the 34-year old Utley looks to be back in form, having played 84 games and batting .277/.337./505 with 15 homers and 43 RBI, right about where he was after last year’s shortened season (11 and 45).
