COLE BATTLES TO 2-0 START

In his 2nd big league start, 2011 top overall draft pick Gerrit Cole outduelled Zack Greinke and the Dodgers to improve to 2-0. This despite not having his good stuff, which teammates and manager Clint Hurdle praised the 22-year old righthander out of UCLA.

Cole went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 7 hits, 0 walks and striking out only one batter, but only allowing 3 ER. Pedro Alvarez hit his 15th homer, a 3-run shot in the 5th inning, to back the rookie as the Pirates went on to a 6-3 win.

Cole’s major league debut against the Giants on June 11 went much smoother with all of his pitches working as he was in command for 6 1/3 innings to get the win. But the result was the same this time around, despite not having a good curveball or change.
