The Houston Astros surprised many by taking Stanford RHP Mark Appel with the top pick in this year’s First Year Player Draft. Appel was drafted after his junior season last year and famously failed to come to terms with the Pirates, who took him with the #8 pick.

While all that was going on in 2012, the Astros seemed to master the brand new draft pool rules by snagging SS Carlos Correia for a more economical price, while still having money in their pool for RHP Lance McCullers Jr. and others. Therefore, there was a question as to whether or not they would take Appel, a Scott Boras client, with the top overall pick this year.

They did.

Signing him is the next step. The ‘Stros have a pool of $11,698,800 to spend on Appel and their other picks from the first 10 rounds. Game on. Here’s the complete list of 1st round picks:
