TERMS AND RULES: BEREAVEMENT LIST

The bereavement list is a list that a major league club can place a player on when it becomes necessary for the player to leave the team due to an illness or death in his immediate family (his or his spouse’s). A player placed on the bereavment list must remain on it for at least 3 days, but not more than 7 days.

The club can replace the player on its 25-man active roster but the player on bereavement leave still counts against the 40-man roster.

There is a separate list, the Paternity List, for players attending to the birth of a child.
