DEADLINE TO TENDER CONTRACTS

Tonight at midnight ET is the deadline for teams to tender contracts. Arbitration-eligibles are greatly affected by this deadline as teams must decide if it is more cost-effective to go through the process with the player and take the arbiters’ ruling, or just let the player leave as a free agent. If a player stands to make more than a club is willing to pay by going through the arbitration process, the club may surrender one of it’s normally high-leverage advantages (club control) by non-tendering the player, thus making him a free agent.

For a good overview with specific player examples, see Ben Nicholson-Smith’s post on MLBTradeRumors.com from earlier today.
