With the MLB playoffs in full swing, the Arizona Fall League begins today with all six teams in action. In the heat of October’s big-league drama, the offseason leagues get underway to little fanfare but some of the biggest names from recent drafts will be going head-to-head in Arizona for the next six weeks.
MLB.com has an excellent page set up for coverage of the offseason leagues. From the MLB.com homepage, you will find it under the STATS tab as the next-to-last link. Here you not only get links to all the offseason leagues, but each MLB club has a link where you can get stats for their organization’s players from whatever offseason league they are playing in. This is a huge improvement from years past.
Of the three games today, the Mesa Solar Sox vs. the Salt River Rafters will feature INF Nick Castellanos (Tigers) and OF Yasel Puig (Dodgers) playing for Mesa against Salt River’s INF Anthony Rendon (WAS) and INF Chris Owings (ARI).
The only problem with the AFL homepage is the MLB team logos shown to be affiliated with each AFL team are not completely accurate. When clicking on a team name to reveal its roster, the far right-hand column shows the major league organization of each player, so it is easy to see from there. The correct affiliations are as follows:
MESA SOLAR SOX
Baltimore, Chicago Cubs, Detroit, Houston, LA Dodgers
PHOENIX DESERT DOGS
Atlanta, Oakland, Miami, Milwaukee, Tampa Bay
Cleveland, LA Angels, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh, San Francisco
SALT RIVER RAFTERS
Arizona, Chicago White Sox, Colorado, Toronto, Washington
Boston, Kansas City, New York Mets, St. Louis, Texas
Using the MLB.com Offseason Leagues page, you will be able to track players whether they play in Arizona, the Dominican or elsewhere this year.
