The 24 hours leading up to the Non Waiver Trade Deadline was very eventful this year and all the back-and-forth that went on didn’t just fizzle out. Big names were moved right up until the 4PM ET deadline.
The NL west took center stage with OF Shane Victorino and RHP Brandon League going to the Dodgers while the Giants countered with the addition of Hunter Pence. The Dodgers gave up a highly-rated prospect in RHP Josh Lindblom while the Giants parted with their #2 overall prospect, C/1B Tommy Joseph, as well as big-leaguer Nate Shierholtz. The Phillies dumped a big chunk of salary while getting back some good talent.
The Ryan Dempster saga finally ended with the RHP going to Texas. The Dodgers and Cubs couldn’t get it together so Dempster expanded his list of clubs that he would accept a trade to. The Yankees and Rangers made the cut and Chicago dealt Dempster to Texas for youngsters Kyle Hendricks and Christian Villanueva. Texas already had injuries among its pitching staff, then on Tuesday it was announced that Neftali Feliz will need Tommy John surgery.
Closer Jonathan Broxton was in much demand and he was dealt to Cincinnati for a pair of minor league pitching prospects. The Royals were hoping to take a big step forward this season like the Pirates but they are deep in the AL central basement while the Reds are red-hot and in first place in the NL central.
The Marlins continued their sell-off, sending RHP Edward Mujica to St. Louis for minor league 3B Zack Cox. The Pirates added 1B Gaby Sanchez and shipped 3B Casey McGehee to the Yankess for RHP Chad Qualls, not exactly the kind of moves the other contenders were making. But these are low-risk moves that either will help the Pirates or will be forgotten if they don’t pay dividends.
Now it is on to the post-deadline phase of the season. There will be moves made, clubs just have to get their trade pieces through waivers to complete a deal. It happens every year and sometimes the moves made are significant. Sometimes a club will make a waiver claim just to block a move. The pennant races are in full swing now.
