The Angels are in a dogfight in the AL west that includes not only Texas but the suddenly-swingin’ A’s as well. Milwuakee is struggling in the NL central, well below .500 and far from their 2011 playoff form. On Friday the two clubs made a deal that sent RHP Zack Greinke to Los Angeles for SS Jean Segura and pitchers Johnny Helweg and Ariel Pena. Yep, the Brew Crew is in sell-mode, alright.
The Angels have some standout pitching in Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson and Dan Haren, but Haren has battled injury this year. Ervin Santana has struggled mightily and is said to be on the block.
Enter Greinke who strengthens the Angels in the exact position that the division-leading Rangers have been made vulnerable via injuries. LA’s starting pitching is now much better than it was yesterday.
GIANTS ACQUIRE SCUTARO – The San Francisco Giants have responded to the temporary loss of INF Pablo Sandoval by acquiring Marco Scutaro from the Rockies for AAA INF Charlie Culberson. The Giants hold down the top spot in the NL west and just saw the second-place Dodgers add INF Hanley Ramirez to their lineup. Scutaro addresses a need with the Giants having somewhat of a patchwork infield. Sandoval has been out with injuries and has played 1B recently in place of a struggling Brandon Belt and an injured Aubrey Huff. It is an odd mix on the infield for the Giants and Scutaro can only help.
