Tuesday was another busy day as the final week before the 2012 Non-Waiver Trade Deadline began. The Braves continued to wait on a Ryan Dempster trade that was being held up by Dempster’s approval as part of his 10-and-5 rights. Dempster reportedly wanted to be traded to the Dodgers, but LA made another move, acquiring INF Hanley Ramirez and LHP Randy Choate from the Marlins for RHP Nathan Eovaldi and a minor leaguer according to Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.
In other moves:
PHILLIES, HAMELS AGREE TO EXTENSION – The Phillies have signed LHP Cole Hamels to a 6yr/$144M extension, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com is reporting. Hamels was another big piece of the hot stove puzzle as the deadline approached. The Phillies are down in the standings and, though they have recently gotten Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Roy Halladay back from the DL, were thought to be a team that might be in sell mode.
PIRATES LAND WANDY – LHP Wandy Rodriguez is the latest veteran to be dealt for prospects by the Houston Astros. The Pirates got Rodriguez for a package of three minor leaguers. The Astros will pay a chunk of what’s left on Wandy’s 3yr/$34M contract that runs through 2013 with the 2014 option now shifting to the player, as was stipulated in the contract.
RAYS DEAL FOR RYAN ROBERTS – The Tampa Bay Rays picked up 3B Ryan Roberts from Arizona for minor-league INF Tyler Bortnick, Greg Luca of MLB.com is reporting. Roberts had been DFA’d by Arizona on Tuesday.
