Nine days after the First-Year Player Draft, and one month out from the July 13th signing deadline, only four of the top 10 selections have signed with their clubs. Houston at #1 (Carlos Correa), Minnesota at #2 (Byron Buxton), Kansas City at #5 (Kyle Zimmer) and Colorado at #10 (David Dahl) have all reached deals.

Still unsigned: #3 Seattle – Mike Zunino, #4 Baltimore – Kevin Gausman, #6 Cubs – Albert Almora, #7 San Diego – Max Fried, #8 Pittsburgh – Mark Appel, #9 Miami – Andrew Heaney.

Still a long way to go till July 13th and teams are working their way through the first go-round with the pool money system that is part of the new CBA. Next month at this time, in the opinion of ESPN’s Keith Law, Appel may be the only first-rounder unsigned. Appel was projected to go to Houston at #1 by many draft prognosticators, but the Scott Boras client may have asked for more than the Astros were willing to shell out. The Pirates at #8 would be in an even more difficult position draft-wise with their pool money.
