ASTROS TAKE CORREA WITH TOP PICK

The Houston Astros went against the pre-draft speculation in picking SS Carlos Correa of Puerto Rico with the top overall pick of the 2012 First Year Player Draft. Houston took Correa rather than college pitcher Mark Appel or high school outfielder Byron Buxton. Much debate centered on whether the Astros would get more immediate help in Appel or more upside in Buxton.

They chose, instead, to select the 17-year old Correa who was impressive in a workout for the Astros recently.

The Twins took Buxton with the second overall pick and the Mariners nabbed Florida catcher Mike Zunino with the third pick. Appel fell all the way to number eight where he was selected by the Pirates.
