MARINERS, A’S SPLIT OPENING SERIES

The Seattle Mariners and Oakland A’s have wrapped up their MLB season-opening series in Japan with each club winning one of the two games. The Mariners racked up a 3-1 11-inning victory in the opener with 8 solid innings from Felix Hernandez and offensive help from Ichiro Suzuki (4-5, 1 RBI) and Dustin Ackley (2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI).

The rematch was a pitching duel between Oakland’s Bartolo Colon and Seattle’s Jason Vargas through six innings, but then Yoenies Cespedes connected for a two-run homer off reliever Shawn Kelley. Colon got the win with 8 innings of 3-hit ball allowing one walk and striking out 6. A Justin Smoak homer was the only scoring for Seattle.

It’s back to the states and more exhibition baseball for both clubs before all of MLB gets started next week.
