The top three teams in Baseball America’s rankings all dropped series openers on Friday night. Top-ranked Florida fell to #16 Ole Miss by a score of 3-0. Rebel sophomore RHP Bobby Wahl moved to 5-0 on the season with eight scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. The Gators manged just three total hits and their junior RHP Hudson Randall, #57 on BA’s 2012 draft list, gave up all three runs in a rough first inning.
Stanford, ranked second, had their Friday-night ace get roughed up as RHP Mark Appel allowed 12 hits and 6 ER over eight innings in a 8-7 loss to #8 Arizona. The sloppy Pac-12 game saw 8 total errors, five by the victorious Wildcats and three by the visiting Cardinal. Appel was actually in line for the victory before David Schmidt came on in the bottom of the ninth and allowed the decisive score in a four-run inning.
The #3-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks followed suit with a 10-6 loss on the road against #15 LSU. Arkansas starter RHP D.J. Baxendale, #85 on BA’s draft board, gave up five runs over 2 1/3 IP and got no decision.
