The much-anticipated debut of Yu Darvish took place today in Peoria, AZ and the recently acquired RHP didn’t disappoint. In a two-inning stint vs. the Padres, Darvish threw 36 pitches, 26 for strikes, and allowed two doubles and no runs while striking out three. He fielded his position well, also, covering first on a grounder to first base and stretching out to grab a chopper high over his head before firing to home to punch out a runner trying to score from third.
The Rangers won 6-2 behind a four-run fourth inning that culminated with a two-run double by Alberto Gonzalez.
True to his reputation from Japan’s NPB league, Darvish got ahead of hitters and showed off an arsenal of many different pitches. He pitched out of the stretch for his entire outing. Darvish’s next scheduled start is Tuesday against the Indians.
