FRIDAY COLLEGE NOTES

#1 FLORIDA – The top-ranked Gators (5-1) got 6 1/3 innings from starter Hudson Randall in which the junior righty allowed one run on five hits en route to a 4-1 victory over William & Mary in Gainesville. Randall was backed up by fellow junior Austin Maddox who tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings and now has thrown 8 2/3 innings’ worth of zeroes in 2012 with nine K’s. SS Nolan Fontana went 3-4 with a run scored to pace the Gator offense.

#2 STANFORD vs. #7 TEXAS – Pre-season All-America (BA) Mark Appel stuck out 10 Longhorns as the Cardinal (2-0) won the series opener against Texas (2-3) by a score of 7-2. The 10 K’s were a career-high for the junior right-hander who went seven innings, giving up a run on three hits. The top of the Stanford batting order did the heavy damage as Jake Stewart, Tyler Gaffney, Stephen Piscotty and Brian Ragira combined to go 10-18 with seven runs scored.

Texas starter Mark Thornhill was rocked for 10 H and 6 R (3 ER) over five innings.

#3 SOUTH CAROLINA – The two-time defending national champions improved to 4-0, beating Elon 8-1 behind seven no-hit innings from senior LHP Michael Roth and five RBI from junior 1B Christian Walker. Junior LHP Nolan Belcher and junior RHP Patrick Sullivan supported Roth’s effort to finish the game with just one hit allowed, a ninth-inning homer by senior SS Garrett Koster.

#5 RICE – The Owls stayed perfect, moving to 6-0, with a 6-5 win over Dallas Baptist in Houston. Senior CF Michael Fuda hit his first HR of the season and Sophomore 3B Shane Hoelscher drove in three runs with two hits. Sophomore RHP Austin Kubitza had a rough start (4 ER over 4 2/3 IP) but the bullpen allowed no runs the rest of the way with junior righty J.T. Chargois striking out two to earn his second save.
