TOP PICK COLE DEBUTS IN AFL

RHP Gerrit Cole pitched as a pro for the first time on Friday, going 2 1/3 inning in the Arizona Fall League. The top overall draft pick in 2011, Cole gave up three runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts while pitching for the Mesa Solar Sox. The UCLA product threw 52 pitches, 35 for strikes, and reportedly reached 100 mph with his fastball.

Cole was taken first overall in the 2001 First-Year Plaer Draft by the Pirates, just ahead of UCLA teammate Trevor Bauer who went third to the Diamondbacks, but didn’t sign until just before the August 15th deadline.
