LHP Danny Hultzen made his professional debut on Friday with two IP in the Arizona Fall League. Hultzen, who played college ball at Virginia, was the second overall selection in the 2011 First Year Player Draft by the Seattle Mariners. On Friday he toed the rubber for the Peoria Javelinas, giving up one earned run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
The ACC Pitcher of the Year faced nine batters in his debut, throwing 42 pitches (26 strikes) and did not figure in the decision as the Javelinas fell to the Surprise Saguros, 6-5.
Hultzen signed just before the deadline and did not play minor league ball, but he has a chance to make the Mariners’ big league roster out of Spring Training.
