Angels right-hander Jered Weaver signed a five-year/$85M contract with the Angels on Sunday, covering Weaver’s last arbitration year, plus four free-agent years. Weaver lost his arbitration case before this season and is earning $7.5M for 2011. The average annual value of Weaver’s new deal is $17.5
News of the deal came as a surprise to some observers, as many Scott Boras clients find their way to free agency. But the 28-year old staff ace got a full no-trade clause as well as various bonuses for All-Star appearances and Cy Young and MVP awards.
Weaver is having having a dominant 2011 season, having started the All-Star game for the AL and posting a 14-6 record with a 2.10 ERA and 7.6 K/9, 2.0 BB/9.
