MARLINS MYSTERIOUSLY OPTION MORRISON

Florida Marlins OF Logan Morrison was optioned to Triple-A after tonight’s home loss against the Giants in a move that came as a surprise to many, including Morrison. Hitting out of the number-three hole, Morrison has had an uneven year so far, sitting at .249 with a .791 OPS and a big RBI month in July (26) while batting only .212.

But there is much buzz that the demotion wasn’t entirely performance-related.

Logan Morrison is a very flamboyant and outspoken player who shoots from the hip, especially on his twitter account, @LoMoMarlins, where he has over 59,000 followers (including @hotstoveheat). He has given his two-cents on a regular basis there, but this move may have had to do with another off-the-field issue. Hard to tell at this point. Could be a combination of things.

But his performance in the middle of the order in a lost season for the Marlins as they get ready to move to a new ballpark in 2012 doesn’t seem to be the most likely cause.

Here’s an article from Joe Capozzi’s blog at PalmBeachPost.com that features Morrison’s post-game comments after hearing the news. If nothing else, it’s a strange brew in south Florida this year.
