GIANTS ACQUIRE BELTRAN FOR WHEELER

The Giants and Mets have reached a tentative agreement that would send OF Carlos Beltran to San Francisco, Fox Sports is reporting. Insiders Jon Paul Morosi and Ken Rosenthal have learned that Beltran and $4M will go to San Francisco for the Giants’ top-rated minor league pitching prospect Zack Wheeler.

Beltran has a full no-trade clause and the deal is pending his approval, which is not expected to be a problem.

Wheeler was ranked as the Giants’ number two propspect (behind Brandon Belt) by Baseball America this spring. In 16 starts at hi-A San Jose, Wheeler is 7-5 with 47 BB and 98 K’s in 88 IP.

*THURSDAY UPDATE*

There was great confusion last night regarding the following reported roster moves. The statement, denial, retractions, etc. are duscussed in the link. Ultimately the Giants sent Emmanuel Burriss to AAA and DFA’d Bill Hall.

In related news, the Giants have reportedly released OF Pat Burrell and sent Belt back to AAA to clear up roster space (40-man and 25-man).

Beltran was seen by many as a huge domino that needed to fall to set off this year’s non-waiver trade deadline activity. Other deals were made today with many players involved and with the deadline looming on Sunday, this could be a very active end of the week and weekend.

Beltran hasn’t impressed me at all. Struck how many times? Reds game!!! Happy it, was Belt that stayed. 🙂

Yeah, I don’t think he’s been the force in the middle they were looking for yet, but it’s early. Last night he got two hits in the loss but he grounded into DP with two guys on in the eighth. The Giants already had a bunch of guys that can do that.
