The Pittsburgh Pirates have the top overall pick in Monday’s draft and, with less than 48 hours to go, that choice isn’t clear. There is much speculation on that pick, and the domino effect it will have on the rest of the draft, with UCLA righty Gerrit Cole being a trendy choice lately.

The last two First Year Player Drafts have had little drama at the top as the Washington Nationals sat in the catbird seat both years and had uber-prospects Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper identified well in advance.

But Pittsburgh has a few different ways to go in what is considered to be a very strong draft class.

Cole and Virginia left-hander Danny Hultzen are attractive pitching options while Rice 3B Anthony Rendon is being touted by many as the top position player. BaseballAmerica’s Conor Glassey mentioned some high school options in an article on May 16th.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Dejan Kovacevek went live this morning with what he’s hearing and that is that it’s Cole. ESPN’s Keith Law said the same thing yesterday.

The Bucs are in good shape with the top pick in a strong draft year. They’ve got a lot of young talent on the roster now and Clint Hurdle is changing the culture and the expectations for this long-suffering franchise. Let’s see what they do Monday at 6PM ET.
